Auteur Helpsheet Task

Task
You are to produce an ‘Auteur’ helpsheet based upon a director. Please litter your helpsheet with images to help back up your argument. This can be done digitally or by simply sticking images and type onto a4 sheets of paper. The worksheets should be of a high standard as they will be distributed to the class for revision purposes.

Your helpsheets must include the following:

  • Short 100-word biography
  • Name 5 key films by the director
  • List the characteristics and recurring themes of the director
  • What influences does the director cite? This could be a film or other forms of arts or popular culture.
  • Which other filmmakers have the director influenced?
  • Which film would you say was quintessential of their style and why?
  • Using your imagination, pitch a new film (not yet made, and probably never will be) that could be made by the director. Explain your reasons.

Watch the Auteur Theory clip and take notes using the 'Cornell Method'. If you are not familiar with this method of note-taking, watch the clip below. It will also help you with your other courses.

Film Studies Group Chat - WhatsApp

We are trialling the use of WhatsApp with our Sixth Form groups. The underlying purpose of WhatsApp is to facilitate communication, and at its most basic level, education is nothing but communication. WhatsApp can provide a channel through which we can achieve faster and more seamless communication with students. It can also increase the level of communication between students and create another venue for learning, help and feedback.

Please note that this WhatsApp group is for educational use only and normal class rules apply!

Use this link below to join the group.

If the link doesn't work, add your name and email to this list and I will send you a link:

We potentially intend to use Whatsapp for some of the following Education Strategies:
  • Use the Group Chats feature to create learning and study groups
  • Create audio lessons that can be sent directly to students.
  • Stay in contact with students outside the classroom
  • Send videos to students.
  • Send graphics such as pictures or charts directly to students

Mise En Scene - Key Elements of Film Form

Objective
These short tasks will allow you to get to grips with mise en scene.

Tasks
1
Watch the clips above beginning with American Beauty. Be as exhaustive as possible in listing and interpreting the extract's significant pro-filmic features - leaving to one side the cinematic aspects. Be unafraid to be inventive and even provocative in interpreting the meanings of these pro-filmic elements. 'Over-reading' is preferred to 'under-reading'.

2
As an independent study task, choose an extract from a film included in the 'Filmish' book. As above, list the pro-filmic elements and interpret to your heart's content. I will choose people at random to read them out in class.

Extra. Choose one of the analyses and attempt the 'commutation test'. This considers how the reading of a text would be different if the main star was swapped for somebody different. Swap out elements and notice the differences that occur in reading.

Presentation
In notebook.

Deadline
Monday the 18th of Sept.
