Mise En Scene - Key Elements of Film Form

Objective
These short tasks will allow you to get to grips with mise en scene.

Tasks
1
Watch the clips above beginning with American Beauty. Be as exhaustive as possible in listing and interpreting the extract's significant pro-filmic features - leaving to one side the cinematic aspects. Be unafraid to be inventive and even provocative in interpreting the meanings of these pro-filmic elements. 'Over-reading' is preferred to 'under-reading'.

2
As an independent study task, choose an extract from a film included in the 'Filmish' book. As above, list the pro-filmic elements and interpret to your heart's content. I will choose people at random to read them out in class.

Extra. Choose one of the analyses and attempt the 'commutation test'. This considers how the reading of a text would be different if the main star was swapped for somebody different. Swap out elements and notice the differences that occur in reading.

Presentation
In notebook.

Deadline
Monday the 18th of Sept.
